Northumbria University putt out!

Matfen Hall recently hosted the Sport Newcastle Annual Charity Golf Day for the 8th year running. In glorious weather 76 golfers enjoyed the beautifully conditioned golf course, with the team from Northumbria University just edging Steve Harper’s Odd Balls team in to second place.

This year’s event was sponsored by SOS, copy, print, scan, winners of the 2019 Tyne and Wear Business Community Award. Andrew, Skelton, SOS Director said, “We are committed to supporting local charities such as Sport Newcastle. We share with them the pursuit of excellence in all that we do.”

Over £3,700 was raised, which will be used to encourage young people in the area to participate and excel in their chosen sport. The picture shows the Northumbria team of staff and students being presented with the George Bayley trophy and their individual awards by SOS Director, John Behan.

The partnership with SOS is particularly pertinent this year as Sport Newcastle will soon be launching their ‘Tokyo 2020 and beyond’ campaign to support the region’s very best prospects in their efforts to get to the Olympics In Tokyo, Paris in 2024 or even Los Angeles in 2028.

Mike Booth, vice chair of Sport Newcastle, said, “Wouldn’t it be great if the people of Tyneside could get behind these young athletes to cheer on our present day medal hopefuls, just like we did when Jonathan Edwards, Steve Cram and Victoria Pendleton were winning medals for the region.”
