July Grants Giveaway

Sport Newcastle recently awarded grants totalling £4150 to 11 individuals and 4 sports clubs/organisations.

Grants ranged from £150 to £500 and covered 10 different sports.

One of the individuals to receive a grant was Ciaran McGovern, who lives in Gosforth, and is already a Taekwondo British champion at the age of 17. His grant will help to pay for the expensive travel costs associated with competing overseas.

As well as being the current junior male -68kg champion Ciaran was also age group British champion in 2012 and 2015. Recently he won competitions in Slovenia and Luxembourg and is aiming for selection for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires later this year.

When informed of the award, Ciaran said, "I am very grateful for the generous grant awarded to me. This will be very helpful in helping me to pursue my dream of representing Great Britain."

Mike Booth (vice chair of Sport Newcastle) said, “Ciaran is obviously an outstanding talent who is highly rated by the national Taekwondo coach. This recommendation decided us to award Ciaran a grant which could help him on his way to becoming a future champion that the North East can be proud of.”

Grants are awarded to aspiring young athletes to support their training, travel to competitions or to provide essential equipment. Clubs may bid for funds to purchase equipment or pay for coaching qualifications for volunteer staff.

Further details are to be found in the 'Grants' section of the website.
