Sport Newcastle's 50th Anniversary fundraising...not just a Hop, Skip and Jump!!

After 50 years of supporting grass roots sport and helping to develop the rising sports stars of the future, with some incredible results and success, Sport Newcastle is 'stepping' up it's fundraising activity in it's fiftieth year!

The plan is to raise a further £50, 000 during its anniversary year, through various fundraising activities, and to help them on their way they have enlisted World Record holder and Olympic gold medallist Jonathan Edwards CBE... to help create awareness and support their fund raising efforts.

Triple-jumper Edwards himself was supported by Sport Newcastle in his early years when he was purchased a valuable pair of spikes to help him compete at the highest level in competitions... and the rest is history as they say.

Patron's for Sport Newcastle include North East Sporting legends Sir John Hall and Alan Shearer CBE and Sport Newcastle have supported the likes of Victoria Pendleton, Chris Cook and current North East rising stars Calum Johnson, Andrew Wilson and Emily Large

Malcolm Dix, President of Sport Newcastle, said, "We aim to raise £50,000 in 2017 to celebrate 50 years supporting North East Sport. I'm delighted to announce £20,000 will go to four key projects that exemplify the beliefs of Sport Newcastle. These are the Eagles Community Foundation, Hat-Trick, the Newcastle United Foundation and the Falcons Community Rugby Foundation.

"Personally I've been involved with Sport Newcastle for the last 40 years so it gives me great pleasure to announce our next phase of funding to help develop grass roots sport in the region."

Jonathan Edwards, said, "When you are a young and up and coming athlete receiving financial support and perhaps more importantly having an organisation like Sport Newcastle believe in you makes a huge difference.

"I am delighted to support their important work helping young people realise their sporting potential and dreams."

Fifteen Year old swimmer Emily Large is making big waves in the world of swimming and has personally benefited from the support of Sport Newcastle.

Emily said “I was delighted to be a Rising Star in 2016 and honoured to be chosen as a Sport Newcastle Scholar. Sport Newcastle’s support has really boosted my confidence and the extra funding has greatly helped me on my swimming journey.”

Sport Newcastle is a registered North East Charity and has so far donated over £2.5 million to local sport development.
