Unsung Heroes Awards Evening 2016
The biennial Unsung Heroes Awards evening took place on Thursday 10th November at Sport Central. These awards are made to recognise people who have given their time, often over many years, to furthering sporting opportunities, especially for young people.
The awards were presented by Alan Younger (chair, Sport Newcastle) with the following people receiving recognition :
Steve Abbot - Badminton, Steven Beaty - Rugby League,Neil Carmichael - Tennis, Chris Davy - Rugby Union, Kevin Howard - Boxing, Peter McLane - Badminton,
Ian Parker - Triathlon, Steve Porter - Badminton,Ellie Roberts - Badminton,
Ken Rodger - Football, Kerry Scott - Gymnastics, Dave Taylor - Marathon,
Leigh Tonks - Gymnastics, Jenny Wilkes - Cricket, Mike Woodward - Badminton
Two members of Sport Newcastle’s committee also received awards:
Malcolm Dix - for his 40 years of service to Sport Newcastle and the wider sporting community in the North East.
Claire Finn - for her many years of unstinting support and fundraising for Sport Newcastle.
This year saw the creation of the new Young Unsung Heroes Award (generously provided by Russell Perry and Justsport).
The first award winner was Milly Kyne who, at 16, has already shown an amazing commitment to volunteering for Hat-Trick, a Newcastle based organisation that supports young people through sport.
